A history of German philosophy in Hebrew translation
The project seeks to address a major lacuna in the historiography of Jewish thought and letters. It will consist of two, mutually dependent efforts: 1) a methodical survey of surviving works (focusing on printed books with possible references to manuscripts, excluding translations printed in journals); 2) A critical evaluation of this historical phenomenon within the framework of empire studies. The project is based on the premise that the aspiration to create a canon of Western philosophical works in Hebrew was shared by agents living in different geographies, under different political regimes, with different ideological orientations, all of whom may be identified with a certain manifestation of the Haskalah movement. I am developing grant proposals that will be submitted in the course of 2023-2024
