German Banking in Mandatory Palestine and Israel: The Contribution of German Jews to the Development of Local Banking, 1933-1948

The study examines the contribution of German Jews to private banking in Mandatory Palestine and in the State of Israel. After the Nazis’ rise to power, several bankers immigrated to Palestine, and moved their business operations there as well. In doing so, they brought the methods of private and personal banking developed in the late 19th century to Palestine. The study will shed light not only on the fascinating issue of their contribution to the local economy, but also on the early days of banking in Israel and on the transition from private to centralized banking in the young country.
